The Rodalquilar caldera together with the superimposed Lomilla caldera host the. The Rodalquilar caldera complex is located in the western part of the Cabo de Gata volcanic field in southeastern Spain and is the first documented example of epithermal gold-alunite.
The Los Frailes Formation lava-flow and dome complex is a Miocene succession that is part of the Cabo de Gata volcanic zone of SE Spain. The complex comprises dominantly dacitic, subaqueous dome rocks and interstratified sedimentary horizons emplaced over a few tens of thousands of years.
Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in the southeastern corner of Spain is Andalusia's largest coastal protected area, a wild and isolated landscape with some of Europe's oldest geological features. Spain's southeast coast, where the park is situated, is the only region in mainland Europe with a true hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification: BWh).
G lobally, the Cabo de Gata park is famous by geologists around the world because the way that volcanology has manifested itself in this land, finding very different forms of rock formations. Strictly speaking the Cabo de Gata is not a desert, it is known as a semi arid zone due to the consistently high humidity levels, over 75%, caused by cold air from the inland Sierra Nevadas flowing down off the mountains to meet the warm, water saturated Mediterranean air.
The geological setting of the Cabo de Gata volcanic field and the evolution of the Los Frailes, Rodalquilar and Lomilla calderas have been discussed in two related papers (Cunningham et al., ; Rytuba et al., ).
This report builds upon those studies and concentrates on the origin of ore deposits and associated hydrothermal alteration within the Rodalquilar caldera and the nested Lomilla caldera. An interesting excursion in the heart of the volcanic sierra de Cabo de Gata leads you from the hamlet of Las Presillas Bajas north and east to the caldera of Majada Redonda.
